Computer networking

It wasn't so very long ago that it was unusual to have even one computer at home; now it's becoming increasingly common to have more than one (particularly when you consider that games consoles are also computers). When this happens, you'll want to enjoy the benefits to be had from a home network:

A network makes it easy to share files between different computers. this removes the need to copy files from one computer to another using floppy disks or other recordable media.

One or more printers can be shared across users on a network. This takes away the need to copy files to another computer so that they can be printed.

With a network you can play head-to-head against the users of other computers on the network. And if you're connected to the internet you could match your skills against players anywhere in the world!

With a network, users can simultaneously share a connection to the internet using one line and one internet account. Networks allow sharing of any type of internet connection: 56K modem, ISDN, ADSL or cable.
Although there are many different ways of creating a home network, the essential choice is whether to go for a wired, wireless or hybrid solution:

Wired. Although the current fashion is for all things wireless, the fact is that a wired network is the best choice for maximum speed, reliability and security. Small networks can be created using flexible 'patch' cables connected to a central 'hub' whereas larger whole-house networks tend to use category-5 (or higher) cable installed alongside the regular mains wiring in the walls and under the floors.

Wireless. As greater numbers of portable computers have appeared, so the demand for wireless networking has grown - allowing people to use their network and internet resources throughout rooms and gardens without trailing wires. Although the network speeds achievable don't match those of wired networks they are sufficient for most users' everyday needs, but conflicts can occur with devices such as wireless video senders, wireless baby monitors, some cordless phones, Bluetooth devices and even microwave ovens.

Hybrid. Perhaps the best option for the modern home is to create a hybrid wired-wireless network - giving all the advantages of the speed and reliability of a wired network throughout the home, but adding the flexibility of a wireless network.
